legal nonsense

billboard i saw today on the road:

Beer. Nachos. Hockey.
God DID bless America!

so i get to where i'm working this morning, and am directed to set up in the conference room. i open the door and two guys (doctors, maybe) are chatting. they kind of look at me, i kind of look at them. the one dude asks if there's a deposition, and i say, yes, at 12:30. (it was 12:15, i'm supposed to be 15 minutes early so i can set up and be ready to go) they ask if i can wait a few more minutes. the consummate professional i am, i say, sure, no problem.

so i'm standing outside the door, ready at any moment to bound inside, set up, and be ready to go. there's no way i'm walking all the way around the building to sit in the lobby when i know they're not going to come find me to tell me they're done yakking. and i hate having to set up while everyone's waiting on me...especially when i got there early so i could be ready to go.

10 or 15 minutes later the guys finally walk out. the one guy kind of apologizes -- one of those courteous, "sorry about that" that you know they don't really mean. and i just say, that's okay, because i'm nice and i'm a representative of my employer, and i'd like to keep my job for a little while longer ;) deep down i was pretty ticked. i kept trying to calm myself down, that it's not that big of a deal, get a grip, blah, blah, blahbity, blah. but i remain annoyed. i can always pretend to be gracious.

so i start getting set up. i'm barely into my set-up when the noticing attorney (the attorney who scheduled the deposition) walks in. he's not even holding a folder or a pen. yup, that's right. the dep has been cancelled.

so all that annoyance...saved me from having to set up all my crap.
ever get sick of having to learn things over and over and over?!

lawyers are people, too, and can say some goofy stuff. here is a question i actually heard an attorney ask of a witness on the record:
"Did you eventually sign a copy that did have your signature on it?"
