chronicles, hearts and wild wings
so tonight while at buffalo wild wings (not as much fun as saying bw3 or b-dub's) we briefly discussed the fact that it was only 9:30 and we're ready for bed. i said it's just being responsible and taking care of your body. liz said it's that she's getting old. and i said, yes, exactly. it's being responsible and taking care of your body. that's what you do when you get old. i guess it was funnier in the moment. oh, well.
i had to drive to fremont today and i had to take bantam. (the car -- soon to be named, by the way -- was in the proverbial shop.) i realized, while on today's excursion, that my heart gets a great workout every winter. not because it's christmastime and there's all this heartwarming, cheesy, lovey stuff going on, but because it JUMPS INTO MY THROAT every time the car slides or fishtails to ANY degree (whether i'm driving or passenging). if you think i'm just a wuss (which i am not -- come here and i'll kick your ass), read my dec. 6 post and make plans to read my dec. 21 post; i have lived through some non-pleasant wintry vehicular death defying experiences.
we went to see chronicles of narnia this morning. that's right, at 12:05 in the AM. i haven't read the lion, the witch and the wardrobe since i was a kid, so i'm going to read it tomorrow. the movie is fantastic. i was moved. (the books were very meaningful to me as a kid, so i don't expect everyone else to be as moved as i was. i am, after all, an oddity) the cast is spot-on, the cgi/effects are beautiful, and the story did make sense in the movie realm. mostly i want to read the book again to see how close the movie was. that reminds me, a friend said he thought that in the previews aslan looked really fake and bad. my word to you now da vinci, go see the frickin' movie. aslan is incredible.
c.s. lewis wrote the chronicles of narnia not to parallel the story of jesus in the bible, but to tell a story of what if.
if jesus were to show up in another world, what could that possibly look like?
i can't wait to read these stories again.
okay! last but not least! we're driving home from the movie theatre at 3:30 AM or something ridiculous like that. you know how the snow/ice builds up on the windshield wipers? so you roll down your window and reach your arm out to snap your wiper to break off the snow/ice? hehe you know how your husband does this at 3:30 AM and only BREAKS the wiper?! i laughed out loud. he was pissed. i thought it was funny because he always tells this story about his friend Bart who did this in downtown kalamazoo and then got out of the car to run back and find the broken off piece. he always mocked his friend for doing this! and yet he did it all himself this morning.
to summarize today's thoughts:
* getting old is about one thing: responsibility
* getting old is not a bad thing
* in the winter i drive like an old person and i'll kick your ass if you mock me
* i can't not be affected by the love of God
* my husband does funny things
group discussion question:
if i drive like an old person, should that truth dictate other aspects of my life, like how i dress, what music i listen to, the type of language i should use, and how i decorate my apartment?
give specific examples.
