after kate's inspiring post about the meanings (and suspicious lack thereof) of her many names, i thought i would post something interesting about my own. marie doesn't have any meanings different from mary (i'm just a variant, though i recall mary means bitter), and i only kept my middle name because my parents gave it to me (alice -- named after dad's mom, whom i dislike emphatically and so therefore don't care what it means), dornan (being the new last name) i just learned:

Irish: reduced Anglicized form of Gaelic O' Dorna'in or O' Doirni'n
'descendent of Doirnin', a byname from a diminutive of dorn, 'fist'.

my maiden name, sheldon, has something to do with location (a shelf and hill were mentioned), but what i like BEST about the name is its coat of arms:
