visit of the parental units

this weekend my parents came down for a couple nights to visit and belatedly celebrate my birthday (which was the 8th -- put it on your calendars for next year!)

some friends of theirs had moved down to GR a couple months ago and they got together with them for dinner friday night. when they were finally headed our way, I talked to my mom on the phone and explained how to get to the new meijer over by M-6, since they wanted to pick up some munchies. I explained that it's really quick once you turn on kalamazoo from 68th street, that there's a lot of restaurants around it, and it's on the right-hand side before the bridge (or M-6).

I thought I gave some pretty clear instructions there. I mean, there's a huge sign, meijer is a pretty recognizable store, and you can't exactly miss M-6 when it bridges over kalamazoo street. (laura, am I right?! this is your neck o' the woods)

a couple hours later I finally get a call from my mom. they're just leaving meijer. she informs me that meijer didn't have any electric carts, so it took them a lot longer to get through the store.

I'm a little surprised...so I say something like, "Really? Meijer didn't have any electric carts? The new meijer, the one on kalamazoo?"

"Oh, no," she said. "We went to the one on 28th street."

my mind races. they were on kalamazoo....they knew to take kalamazoo to 32nd street in order to get back to our apartment....

"MOM, YOU WENT TO THE GHETTO MEIJER?!" I practically shout into the phone. she repeats what I said to my dad, and I hear them both chuckle. "we didn't know," they said!

holy cow. a place we don't feel very at ease entering in broad daylight, and my parents go there at 9pm at night. after harassing them a little bit on how they missed the perfectly nice gaines township meijer, they tell me, "Oh. Well, it wasn't right on the road. We saw a meijer sign, but since it wasn't right on the road we figured it was meijer something else."

so we picked on them all weekend about it. because it's funny. because it's the wierdest meijer in all the land. and because they're my parents :)

Ghettor Meijer! I love it. My parents made us stop there a couple of years ago. Not a fun experience. Aren't parents grand!

Oh, I just can't stand it. How much closer to the road does it need to be? I mean, the Shell station doesn't exactly take up vast amounts of acreage here...ha ha ha. And yes, M6 is my neck o' the woods, being that we can see it out our friggin' window. Sheesh.

Wedding Crashers is in my car! And I drove right past your apt. complex today...didn't even cross my mind to stop! Forgive me for being a moron... :)

Thus endeth the longest comment ever.

I know, laura, that's what I thought! I couldn't believe they just drove by the meijer because it wasn't right on the road. grrr.

if you're ever driving by beaners on breton, look for my car, 'cause I'm probably there. :) hehehhee in fact, I'm there right now! :P

hey, we call it the ghetto meijer too... AND we go there all the time. Even at 9:00 at night. That is when all the best domestic brawls happen!
Now that I moved, I don't know which one is "my" meijer anymore. I'm feeling kind of lost.

I love the ghetto Meijer! Where else can you shop at that has large portions of missing ceiling tile and where you're not sure if the gunshots coming from the electronics department are real or from the movie they're showing?
